Abiding Artistry | Hair Removal Spa

In the world of beauty and self-care, few topics create as much confusion as hair removal. At Abiding Artistry, Dallas-Fort Worth’s premier spa for organic sugaring hair removal and holistic skin treatments, we often hear clients express regret about beliefs they’ve held since their teenage years.

“If only I had known this sooner!” is something we hear daily when we dispel these long-standing misconceptions. As we’re well into 2025, it’s time to clear up what’s true and what’s myth about hair removal methods, how well they work, and what science actually tells us about how your hair grows.

The Big Question: Does Shaving Make Hair Grow Back Thicker?

First things first: No, shaving does not make your hair grow back thicker, darker, or faster. This myth is so common that many people avoid shaving certain body areas, fearing they’ll end up with more noticeable hair.

“Shaving only removes hair at the surface level of the skin,” explains our lead esthetician at Abiding Artistry. “It doesn’t affect the hair follicle below the skin, which determines thickness, colour, and growth rate.”

What’s really happening is a matter of perception.

Hair naturally tapers to a fine point at the end. When you shave, you create a blunt edge that feels coarser when it emerges. This blunt edge can also look darker because it hasn’t been lightened by sun exposure like the tip of longer hair would be.

Scientific studies have repeatedly confirmed that shaving doesn’t affect the number of hair follicles, the thickness of individual hairs, or how quickly they grow. And no, women who shave their faces (a practice called dermaplaning) won’t suddenly develop a beard!

So, What Affects Hair Growth?

Hormones, genetics, and your overall health have a far greater influence on hair growth than any razor ever could. Life transitions like puberty, pregnancy, and menopause can all shift your hair’s texture and growth rate.

Better Alternatives for Long-Term Hair Reduction

If you’re looking for smoother skin that lasts longer than a day or two, sugaring offers a natural, holistic alternative. Unlike shaving, sugaring removes hair from the root, leading to slower, finer regrowth over time. And because it’s all natural, it’s ideal for sensitive skin.

The Real Deal About Hair Removal Methods

Each hair removal method offers unique benefits and has its own limitations. Understanding these can help you make choices that work best for your skin type, preferences, and lifestyle.

 Shaving: Quick but Brief

Shaving gives immediate results and is painless when done properly. You can do it at home without spending much, but results typically only last 1-3 days.

However, shaving can cause razor bumps and irritation, especially in sensitive areas. It may lead to ingrown hairs, particularly if you have curly hair. The need for frequent upkeep and the stubble effect when hair regrows are other downsides.

       Sugaring: The Time-Tested Alternative

Sugaring results last similar to waxing (3-6 weeks). It uses all-natural ingredients (sugar, water, lemon juice) and is less painful than traditional waxing. Sugaring has a lower risk of ingrown hairs compared to waxing and shaving, and removes hair in the natural direction of growth.

However, sugaring requires proper technique to be effective. It’s not available at all spas (though we specialize in it at Abiding Artistry!) and involves hair length to be ¼ inch.

“Sugaring has been practiced for centuries, especially in the Middle East and Northern Africa. Its comeback in modern spas isn’t just about being ‘natural’ – it’s genuinely gentler on the skin while being highly effective,” explains our founder.
