Let’s be real with you from the start: electrolysis is not a quick fix. It is not a one-and-done treatment, and it is not something you walk into casually and walk out of transformed. It is a process, a real, meaningful, permanent one, and like any process worth doing, it rewards the people who show up prepared.
So before your first electrolysis appointment, here are a few things worth thinking through. Not because we’re trying to talk you out of it. Quite the opposite. We want you to get every bit of what this treatment has to offer.
Come with an Open Mind: Electrolysis Is Different from Everything You’ve Tried
If you’ve tried shaving, waxing, or laser, you have a set of expectations baked in. Electrolysis is different in almost every way, and the biggest mistake new clients make is measuring it against standards that don’t apply.
Electrolysis works follicle by follicle, targeting each hair with a precise electrical current delivered directly to the root. That’s exactly why the results are permanent, and why it’s effective on all skin tones, hair types, and hair colors, unlike laser hair removal, which depends on pigment contrast. Electrolysis is the only FDA-recognized method of permanent hair removal. That’s a clinical distinction, not a marketing line.
Clearing a treatment area takes multiple sessions over several months. The timeline depends on your hair growth cycle, density, and consistency. There’s no universal schedule we can promise upfront, because your hair is yours, and we treat it accordingly.
Hydrate Before Your Appointment & We Mean Actually Hydrate
This sounds simple, but it makes a bigger difference than most people expect. Electrolysis uses the water content in the follicle as part of how it works. Hydrated skin is more pliable, the follicle is easier to treat, and the sensation is noticeably more manageable. Dehydrated skin is more sensitive, more reactive, and less cooperative.
- Please drink water ( that has electrolytes or sea salt), especially the week before your appointment, not just the morning of.
- Skip alcohol and heavy caffeine for at least 24 hours before you come in. The days you arrive well-hydrated are almost always the sessions that go smoother and feel better.
What to Avoid Before Your Electrolysis Appointment
This is where a lot of first-time clients make mistakes that affect their results.
Do not tweeze, wax, thread, or epilate the treatment area for at least 3–4 weeks before your session. Electrolysis works by targeting the hair inside the follicle, any method that pulls the root out removes exactly what we need in order to treat it permanently. Shaving is completely fine and is the preferred method between sessions.
- Stop using retinol, retinoids, or chemical exfoliants on the treatment area at least 3–4 days before your appointment. These thin the skin and heighten sensitivity.
- Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least 5 days prior, and skip intense workouts the day of.
- Come in with clean, product-free skin, no heavy lotions, no makeup on the face, no deodorant if we’re treating underarms.
If you’re on any medications or have had recent skin treatments like laser or fillers, let us know at your consultation. Some things affect our protocol, and we’d rather know upfront.
Come with Your Questions
There is no question too basic or too specific to ask your electrologist. This is a permanent treatment, you deserve to understand what’s happening at every stage of it.
Clients come in asking things like: How many sessions will it take to clear my area? Does electrolysis hurt? How is it different from laser for my skin tone? What does regrowth between sessions actually mean? Write yours down before you come in. We’d rather spend ten minutes answering everything upfront than have you leave with doubts.
Ask Yourself: Are You Really Ready for This Journey?
This is the most important question, and the one we want you to sit with before you commit.
Electrolysis works. But it requires something a lot of people underestimate: commitment over time. Not just financial commitment, time, consistency, and the willingness to keep showing up even when life gets busy or progress feels slow.
The clients who get the best results aren’t necessarily the ones with the easiest cases. They’re the ones who show up consistently, follow aftercare, and give the process the patience it deserves.
If you’re not sure you’re ready yet, that’s okay. Come in for a consultation. Let us show you what the real timeline looks like for your specific hair and skin. We’d rather you make a fully informed decision, even if that means coming back in six months completely ready, than rush in before you’re prepared.
